Albert Guinovart is one of Spain's leading composers and pianists and a distinguished heir to the extraordinary cultural renaissance that flourished in Catalonia at the beginning of the twentieth century. His artistic voice is deeply rooted in the European classical tradition while remaining firmly connected to Catalan musical heritage and popular culture.

His prolific output spans virtually every musical genre, including opera, ballet, symphonic and chamber music, piano repertoire, musical theatre, film and television scores, alongside an active international career as a pianist, orchestrator and educator. His works have been premiered in major concert halls around the world by renowned soloists, conductors and orchestras.

As a stage composer, Guinovart is the creator of the operas Atzar and Alba Eterna, the ballet Terra Baixa, and some of the most celebrated musicals in Catalan theatre, including Mar i Cel, Flor de Nit, Gaudí, Scaramouche and La Vampira del Raval. His achievements in musical theatre have been recognised with two Max Awards for Best Musical Score and three Butaca Awards for Best Composer. Works such as Mar i Cel and Flor de Nit have become cultural landmarks whose songs continue to resonate with audiences decades after their premieres.

Chamber music occupies a central place in his catalogue. Notable works include Les Aventures de Monsieur Jules Verne for brass ensemble and piano (Alicia Award 2021), sonatas for flute, oboe and piano, and saxophone and piano, the piano trio Mirall Trencat for violin, horn and piano, the Kepler Quartet, and Trio Celebration, commissioned by Tempus Trio and awarded the 2026 Spanish Academy of Music Award.

Guinovart's orchestral music is distinguished by its expressive power, refined orchestration and unmistakable personal language. His most significant works include El Lament de la Terra, commissioned by the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and National Orchestra of Catalonia and premiered under Roberto Minczuk; El Somni de Gaudí, commissioned by the Castile and León Symphony Orchestra and premiered under Vasily Petrenko; and his three Piano Concertos: the first based on themes from Mar i Cel, Traces, and Les mans del vent. The first two concertos were recorded for Sony Classical with the State Symphony Academy Orchestra conducted by Vasily Petrenko, while the Third Piano Concerto was recorded with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and National Orchestra of Catalonia under Diego Martín-Etxebarria.

His concerto repertoire also includes two Flute Concertos—the second commissioned by the Castile and León Symphony Orchestra and premiered by Emmanuel Pahud and Thierry Fischer—two Clarinet Concertos, a Horn Concerto and a Percussion Concerto. His Three Pictorial Landscapes for marimba and symphonic wind band, later orchestrated, has become one of his most frequently performed works, largely through the advocacy of percussionist Conrado Moya.

In 2024, Guinovart premiered two major symphonic works: Symphony of the Angels, written in memory of Victoria de los Ángeles and premiered by the Franz Schubert Filharmonia under Tomàs Grau with soprano Ermonela Jaho at the Palau de la Música Catalana; and Gaudí Symphony, premiered by the Barcelona Municipal Band under José Rafael Pascual-Vilaplana and awarded the 2025 Alicia Award.

His sacred music includes the Requiem, Te Deum, Missa Brevis, Dixit Dominus, Salve Regina, The Messiah and Gloria, the latter receiving the 2019 Anselm Clavé Award.

The piano lies at the heart of Guinovart's artistic identity. Following in the tradition of Frederic Mompou and Xavier Montsalvatge, he has developed a highly individual musical language characterised by lyricism, harmonic refinement and expressive warmth. Works such as Sonata "C'est l'amour",  Valses Poéticos, Portraits of Barcelona, Fantasia-Evocació, Skyshadows, the 24 Preludes, Poems Without Words and his numerous Nocturnes have become firmly established in the contemporary piano repertoire.

His compositions and orchestrations have been performed by internationally acclaimed artists including Plácido Domingo, Gustavo Dudamel, Christopher Hogwood, Vasily Petrenko, Lawrence Foster, Philippe Entremont, Gianandrea Noseda, Josep Pons, Sir Neville Marriner and Victoria de los Ángeles, together with orchestras such as the Sydney Festival Orchestra, Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, Orchestre National de Montpellier, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, State Academic Symphony Orchestra of St Petersburg, Israel Chamber Orchestra, Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and National Orchestra of Catalonia, Madrid Symphony Orchestra and the Castile and León Symphony Orchestra.

As a pianist, Guinovart enjoys an extensive international career, performing both the core classical and Romantic repertoire and his own compositions. He has appeared in leading concert halls throughout Europe, the Americas, Japan and Australia, and collaborated in memorable recitals with the legendary soprano Victoria de los Ángeles.

His discography comprises more than sixty recordings released by labels including EMI, Decca, Harmonia Mundi and Sony Classical, featuring both the Spanish piano repertoire—Granados, Albéniz, Turina and Rodrigo—and his own music.

Alongside his concert career, Guinovart has established himself as a distinguished composer for film and television. He composed the score for El llarg hivern, orchestrated the Academy Award-winning soundtrack for The Artist, and wrote the themes for several iconic Catalan television series, including Nissaga de Poder, Laberint d'ombres, Mirall Trencat and El Cor de la Ciutat.

He was commissioned to compose the official music for the FINA World Championships held in Barcelona in 2003 and 2013, and for the 2025 America's Cup.

In 2023 he made his Carnegie Hall debut with a recital dedicated to the memory of Alicia de Larrocha, marking the centenary of the legendary pianist's birth. The programme included the world premiere of Nocturn a Alicia, composed in her honour.

The same year, Sony Classical released Poems Without Words, his fifth album for the label and his second solo piano recording. The album brings together twenty-four preludes composed during the pandemic and first shared daily through social media as a message of hope. It was met with widespread international acclaim.
